The night kicked off with the table top social hour. Members connected with faces new and old. They were also able to check out the latest equipment and services showcased by our local manufacturer’s representatives.
The main program’s guest speaker, Daryn Cline, hailed all the way from Maryland. As Evapco’s Director of Environmental Technologies, Daryn promotes sustainable technologies. He is also a voting member of ASHRAE 191 Efficient Use of Water in Building, Site, and Mechanical systems and is a member of ASHRAE Standing Standard Committee 189.1 serving on Water and Energy sub-committee groups.
The first portion of his session focused on utilizing cooling towers in the free cooling mode to reduce data center Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Since data centers consume 2% of the U.S. electric power grid, data center developers and utilities recognize the benefits of employing energy savings strategies.
He showed that free cooling, or water side economizers, requires only 0.1kW/ton to remove heat load. Whereas water cooled chiller operation requires 0.55 to 0.75 kW/ton and air cooled chillers run around 1.2 kW/ton. Now that ASHRAE allows operation of data centers at temperatures at or above 75F, data centers can utilize more hours of free cooling throughout the year and obtain additional savings. Upon applying free cooling, the Green Grid’s PUE energy efficiency metric specifically for data centers can be reduced by 20%. Daryn went through examples to display these trends and also went over design tips and concerns for free cooling.
The second half of the presentation was on Thermal Ice Storage. The principle of operation is to make ice at night when energy cost is low and then melt the ice during the day for use. This shifts the electrical use to off peak hours, requiring less energy, less green house gas emissions and provides energy cost savings. Supporting materials and examples were provided. And it was shown that Thermal Ice Storage can be used to meet ASHRAE 189.1 Section 188.8.131.52.
