While spending a few nights in the dark with lanterns and flash lights I started to think LA really is not a city designed for high wind loads. High winds just don't happen here all that often. What we do design for are the big shakers. We're in earthquake territory.
Even though things are not rated the same, I kind of wished they were all like Evapco. The construction of Evapco is compliant with the International Building Code's requirements for both seismic and wind load forces. If everything could be rated to withstand winds up to 145 psf and seismic forces of 5.12 g like Evapco's upgraded structure, there would be less damage and risk of injury.
I hope all those affected by the winds are safe, that the power has returned, and that clean up is stead fast. Be careful out there!
